Although its use is legal, alcohol remains the most popular drug used by both teenagers and adults. Just because a substance is legal, does not necessarily mean it is safe. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), alcohol use contributes to more than 88,000 deaths each year, making alcohol use the third leading cause of death that is preventable in the United States. Additionally, alcohol use by teens kills about 4,700 people every year, according to statistics reported by Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
