Marijuana Dabbing Is Making Its Way Back on the Scene
These days, everyone in the drug scene is looking to create the next best high. With all of this competition and experimenting, it is no wonder that marijuana dabbing is back on the scene and becoming more popular.
Users often use altered water pipes or bongs to smoke this dab, but an e-cigarette can also be used. Marijuana dabbing is not a new form of abusing drugs, but the younger generation is finding new ways to modify how to use marijuana.
What is marijuana dabbing exactly? Marijuana dabbing is when a user inhales vapors from a concentrated form of marijuana. This concentrated form is made by an extracting method that can be very dangerous. Common names for dabs are butane hash oil (BHO), budder, honeycomb, or earwax. These forms are more potent than conventional forms of marijuana, because their concentration levels are much higher.
John Stogner, an assistant professor of criminal justice and criminology at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte stated, “We have been seeing an emergence of dabs over the last three years.†He continued, “It is really exploding onto the drug use scene.†Stogner also explained that marijuana dabbing is the newest trend simply because users are drawn in to trying whatever someone else is doing and promoting as the next best high. Some people say the appeal of dabbing is that it’s considered as a stronger, faster high than just smoking marijuana. Stogner states, “At a minimum, dabs are four times as strong as a joint, and the high is administered all at once.â€
Stogner believes that rise in this “new†trend can be attributed to medical marijuana and the legalization of marijuana in certain states. With both of these events happening, more and more people are being open about their use of the drug and their techniques to enjoy a better high. They use social media and post videos on YouTube, which spreads the trends even faster.
Blasting is a term used when users attempt to create marijuana dabs at home. Believe it or not production risks are comparable to manufacturing methamphetamine. The users are pouring butane over marijuana, which allows THC to be extracted from the marijuana plant. The THC then dissolves into the butane. This solution is then pressed through the filter and placed in a container. Producing this dab can result in explosions, chemical burns, and fires. The remaining gummy substance is very high in THC, which can reach concentration levels up to 80%. This gummy substance does not contain much else, other then THC.
At this moment there is not a definite understanding of the health effects and physiological risks associated with dabbing. There have been minimal studies done on this method of using marijuana. While some people are suggesting this method is more dangerous, more studies need to be completed on this process, or people can simply let this “new†trend fade back into the distance again and avoid any further damage to themselves or others.
