We’ve included a breakdown of the basic information about Medicare in Hawaii for Substance Abuse as well as a listing at the bottom of this page of the various treatment programs in Hawaii that accept Medicare.
Does Medicare pay for Substance Abuse Treatment in Hawaii?
Generally speaking, Yes.
Medicare will help pay for substance abuse treatment in both inpatient and outpatient settings if:
1) You receive services from an Hawaii Medicare-participating provider or Medicare participating facility in Hawaii;
2) Your physician or doctor in Hawaii states that the services are medically necessary; and
3) Your doctor sets up your plan of substance abuse treatment in Hawaii.
Inpatient care: Medicare Part A can help to pay for your care if you are hospitalized for substance abuse treatment. Your out-of-pocket costs are generally the same as for any other type of “non-substance abuse related” hospital stay.
Outpatient care: Medicare Part B can help to pay for outpatient treatment for substance abuse. Medicare will generally pay 50 percent of its approved amount for mental health services, and you or your supplemental insurance are responsible for the rest.
Covered services include, but are not limited to:
1) Psychotherapy for substance abuse
2) Patient education regarding diagnosis and treatment for substance abuse
3) Post-hospitalization follow-up
4) Prescription drugs administered during a hospital stay or injected at a doctor’s office
NOTE: Methadone, because it is in pill form, is not generally covered by Medicare Part B. The new Medicare drug benefit (Part D) will not cover methadone for substance abuse treatment, although it may covered for other conditions.
