New Drug, Flakka Taking Over Florida and Wreaking Havoc
Flakka was re-introduced onto the scene late last year, around September. Many people thought that it would be a quick phase, that would fade away with all of the horror stories surrounding the new drug. This could not be any further from the truth. This dangerous drug flakka taking over Florida is creating an extreme problem.
You may be wondering why is flakka taking over Florida and not other locations? While flakka is being abused in other states, for the most part the dealers are staying centrally in Florida. Another question might be why is flakka taking over Florida opposed to other drugs? The sad reality of this drug is that it is very cheap and very accessible. Flakka is also known as the 5$ insanity. The dealers are preying on the poor and homeless, because this drug is so cheap. For just $5 people believe that they are going to get drug similar to cocaine, but that could not be any further from the truth.
Flakka is very similar to bath salts, which we all remember the horror stories associated with that drug, including a homeless man getting his face eaten off at the top off the list. Using this drug can cause death from just one use along with, heart trouble, extreme aggressive and paranoid behaviors, and in many cases even psychotic. The abuser’s body temperature skyrocket up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
James Hall, an epidemiologist at Nova Southeastern University, who studied the Florida drug market for years states, “The victims tear off their clothes, some think their body is on fire.†Hall continues, “They would run wild through the streets believing they are being chased by people or imaginary wild animals seeking to kill them.”
Since the drug emerged in September, 34 people have died from it. Hall states that flakka has been around since the 1960s, but has been reformatted into a more powerful substance to make addicts and money faster. A few examples of flakka taking over Florida are in March, a male on flakka tried to kick in the door of the Fort Lauderdale police station to escape what he thought was an attacker chasing him. Just days later, another flakka abuser died from impaling himself on the fence outside the same police station from trying to climb the protective barrier. They assume he, also was trying to escape from a hallucination. In May, police in Fort Lauderdale shot and killed a man who was abusing flakka, because he was holding his wife against her will with a knife. Hall states that emergency rooms are dealing with at least 20 cases a day for flakka abuse.
The worst part about this drug is that it can be purchased online and distributed. For $1,500 you can buy a kilo of flakka. This may sound like a large investment, but a kilo of cocaine can cost 15 times more than that. This is why the drug can be sold for only $5. Chinese companies also advertise flakka openly online and will mail it directly to your home. It will be mailed directly to your home from China in small quantities and can then be distributed to dealers. This explains why flakka is taking over Florida. People are looking for a cheap why to get high and are receiving much more than they anticipated.
