Muncie Indiana Drug Bust Leads to $30,000 Drug Seizure
On November 10th, 2014, Muncie Indiana Police Department made a substantial drug bust. This Muncie Indiana drug bust lead to police confiscating over $30,000 in drugs and making an important connection between states. Scott O’Dell of the Muncie Police Department’s narcotics unit stated that their drug bust was completed based on a four-month investigation. This investigation was on “a crew from Detroit dealing out of hotels,” stated Scott O’Dell.
This Detroit crew is crossing the boarder into Indiana, in the east central area, and selling their drugs. Among the drugs confiscated were, $15,000 worth of heroin and around $15,000 of marijuana and prescription drugs. Handguns, one of them believed to be used in an attempted shooting in Muncie on Saturday, as well as a large amount of cash were also found and confiscated.
This Muncie Indiana drug bust has made a huge impact on the area, as well as Michigan. While the drug activity continues in both areas, it is now known that these crews are coming down into the Indiana area. O’Dell states the influx of drugs from Detroit to Indiana continues, “Once we bust one, they just send more people down.” He states that it is a continuous cycle, but now that it has been made public, more people are aware of their surroundings. Making this bust, heightens the Detroit and Michigan police to up their enforcement and try to contain these drug crews that are filtering into the East Central Indiana area. Some of this crew was arrested Monday afternoon when police raided Room 135 at the Bestway Inn. Police not only found more than 140 grams of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, prescription medication, and a handgun; they also found digital scales in the room. The operation was being run out of multiple hotels in the area. Justin Lee King, 36, seemed to be the ring leader for the crew that was sent down into Indiana. The hotel room was under King’s name and he was also in possession of the handgun, without a license. King was the oldest of the crew members arrested, with most of the other members being between the ages of 17 and 27.
This drug bust raises quite a few questions. Why are Michigan drug dealers and their crews heading into Indiana? Is there too much drug competition in the Michigan area? Is there a bigger market for heroin and other drugs in Indiana? One thing is for sure, now that the drug bust has taken place, this leaves room for other crews to cross the boarder and try to set up their operation in Indiana. As O’Dell of the narcotics unit states, it is a continuous cycle, so there will always be more dealers and crews to fill that void. Michigan and Indiana, if they are not already joining forces, need to compare notes and files and get this situation under control, before these drug crews move into other areas of Indiana.
