Macklemore Relapsed Over A Year Ago on Sleeping Pills and Marijuana
Famous rapper, Macklemore, has been open and honest about his drug use in the past. Recently, Macklemore relapsed on sleeping pills and marijuana. While some people may not think the drugs he was abusing are worthy of confessing a relapse, they are. Sobriety means a lot to people that have maintained it. To them, lying about not abusing drugs even once can weigh on the person’s conscience, making them more vulnerable to an additional relapse. For an addict it is best to come clean about a situation and move forward in a positive direction.
Macklemore relapsed, because of the pressure he felt he was under and his lifestyle after his album became so popular. Macklemore states, “I was burnt out. I was super-stressed.†He continues on, “We weren’t sleeping, doing a show every day, zigzagging all over the country.†While he may have thought that lifestyle was great at first, that routine can drag you down very quickly. Taking care of yourself is very important to maintaining sobriety. I do not just mean taking care of yourself physically, but mentally as well. Sometimes the mental battle can be more difficult than the physical battle. Macklemore explains his mental state, “In terms of the media, I was getting put into a box that I never saw for myself.†He continues, “The pressure and the fame, everything, I just wanted to escape.”
Macklemore explained the amount of pressure he felt to make another record to live up to his first one, which can be a daunting task, especially when you are on tour while trying to write and record another record. In his above statement he states a keyword that is linked to addiction, escape. Wanting to escape from a situation is the main reason people become addicted to drugs, alcohol, gambling, or any other type of addiction. They do not want to face reality and use their choice of drug as an escape. In Macklemore’s case he abused sleeping pills and marijuana. Sleeping pills and marijuana can be just as dangerous as any other drug, especially when they are mixed together. People may see sleeping pills as not harmful, but they are. Abusing sleeping pills can lead to heart issues, depression, suicidal thoughts, breathing issues, memory loss, and much more.
When Macklemore relapsed, he admitted that he stopped attending his 12-Step meetings and that is when he really fell deeper into abusing his choice of drugs. So how did he put down the drugs and continue on with life? While it may not be that simple for some people, he had a wake up call. What was this wake up call? Macklemore says the wake up call came in the form of some good news. His fiancee announced that she is pregnant. She told him this news back in January and that was his motivation to stay clean and sober. Macklemore is motivated to stay clean and sober for not only his new family, but for himself, as he admitted questioning his behavior even before the news of his fiancee’s pregnancy. Let’s hope this motivation and relapse has helped Macklemore grow and learn from his mistakes.
