Dave Chappelle Performing Drunk In Detroit Gets Booed
Dave Chappelle has been known for his outlandish and controversial standup comedy, as well as some off the wall stunts, like disappearing to Africa. Dave Chappelle performing drunk is his latest fiasco. Chappelle performed a standup show last Thursday in Detroit. This show has been getting a lot of attention, but not in a good way.
It was reported that the crowd booed most of the night, due to Dave Chappelle performing drunk. Chappelle was heckled and booed by the crowd after he allegedly slurred his words during a two hour show. Chappelle’s fans called the show “horrible” on social media, complaining about the money they spent. TMZ posted a video of Chappelle being heckled by the audience during his rambling free for all show, if that is what you would call it.
Reports say Chappelle told very few jokes during his show. Through most of the show Chappelle sat on stage quietly smoking, rambling, and slurring his words. Various complaints went out over social media about Dave Chappelle performing drunk. One tweet from @TLanzzz, stated, “Yea, I don’t know what part of professional comedy involves having absolutely no material but #davechappelle has mastered it.”
The general manager of Fillmore Detroit, Ben Doughty, stated by Monday morning he communicated with about 40 people through email and phone, out of an audience of 2,000 people. Most of the underwhelmed people that called in to complain were compensated with tickets to a subsequent Chappelle show on Friday or Saturday. Doughty explained, “For those that reached out quickly enough, we were able to accommodate them with another show.”
Would you want tickets to another show of a comedian who was drunk throughout the whole show? I would not waste my time going back to see him and would want a complete refund. Apparently, Chappelle was able to use his horrible show to fuel the other shows he added in Detroit. Chappelle received some great reviews for his remaining shows.
A WDIV-TV review stated, “The last time Chappelle performed at The Fillmore, just a few years ago, it was an utter disaster.†The review went on, “He was heckled so hard that he stopped performing material, and just talked with the crowd for three hours.†The review continued, “A more polished, calm, cool and collected Chappelle took the stage in Detroit, and that’s good news for his fans.â€
Chappelle even worked some references to his flop on Thursday night into his routine. And an unidentified rep stated, “Out of the 50 shows on the tour, Thursday was definitely not his best set.†The rep continued, “On the flip side, the incident inspired some additional sharp witted material and Friday he came back with a vengeance.”
Chappelle performed six shows over three nights in Detroit, with tickets at $57.50 to $240 a piece. Hopefully for Chappelle’s sake, as well as his fans, he will be able to continue on a successful tour without the abuse of alcohol or any other substances.
