Recognizing Symptoms of Addiction
Drug addiction is a serious illness that many people face on a daily basis. And what makes the problem even more severe is that many of those who are addicted to drugs do not realize their addiction or the seriousness of the matter regarding their personal health. The following symptoms are a great way to determine whether or not someone is dealing with symptoms of addiction.
Can’t Live Without
If a person has a feeling that they cannot go a day without using a drug, this is one of the main signs that an addiction is present. A person may have the need to use the drug several times throughout the day in order to maintain some form of sanity. The person may feel that they need the drug in order to deal with any difficulties that are occurring in their life. Sometimes a person may even feel that the drug eases a physical pain- even when there is no clear evidence as to why the person is in pain. Whatever the reason a person may have, a feeling of not being able to cope without a specific drug is a clear indicator of drug addiction.
Continuous Relapses
When confronted about drug use by family and friends, many people who are addicted will attempt to quit on their own to show they are not addicted to a drug. When a person is never successful in their attempt to quit this is a clear indicator that they have a serious addiction that they cannot control without some form of professional help.
Storing Drugs
When a person feels the need to store a drug to so that they always have a supply available when they feel the need to use them is a clear indicator of addiction. This is seen a lot with people addicted to prescription drugs. The fear of not getting another prescription leads them to seek ways to stock up on prescription pills and store them for future use.
Going Broke
When people are showing signs of not being able to maintain their everyday bills or have enough money to provide food for themselves or their family, this can be another sign of drug addiction. Many people will put the need to use drugs over the need for food and other living necessities. They will spend their last dollar just to keep their high going.
Stealing
When people addicted to drugs begin to spend all they have to maintain their addiction they sometimes will resort to stealing from family, friends and strangers. Families of addicts have reported times when they began to notice things missing in the home before they finally realized who was stealing. Addictions for some have become so bad that they have even stolen items from their own children just to get high.
These are some signs that a person is addicted to a drug. If someone sees any of these symptoms of addiction in themselves or someone they love, they should immediately seek professional help.
