Michigan drug and alcohol treatment facilities

Michigan Drug Rehab Info

Michigan is surrounded by four of the Great Lakes. Many people visit Michigan to enjoy time fishing, boating, and many other recreational activities. The "Motor City" of Detroit is home to many massive auto production facilities. Michigan, though, has not escaped from a violent rampage of alcohol and drug abuse and addiction throughout the state. The Drug Enforcement Administration has categorized several different cities in Michigan as "High Density Drug Trafficking Areas" (HIDTA).

The most severe drug threat in Michigan is caused by cocaine, especially crack cocaine. The urban areas of the HIDTA region of Michigan is where most of the crack cocaine is converted. Crack cocaine is responsible for many of the homicides, assaults, robberies, and burglaries that occur. Protecting trafficking operations is the reasoning behind many of these crimes.

In 2005, the sale of products containing pseudophedrine and ephedrine (ingredients in methamphetamine) was restricted. Public awareness campaigns were also organized. As a result, methamphetamine production decreased within a year after.

The HIDTA regions are also infested with drugs such as heroin, marijuana, MDMA, and diverted pharmaceuticals. Heroin is also more available in the Detroit and Flint areas than in the past. Young Caucasians seem to be abusing heroin more than any other group. In Kalamazoo, high school students have began using heroin as well. Law enforcement authorities have reported that South American heroin makes up 70 percent of the heroin supply in the HIDTA region. Southwest Asian heroin makes up 25 percent of the supply, and the rest consists of Mexican and Southeast Asian heroin.

Marijuana is also very popular throughout Michigan. Mexican marijuana is the most common, but Canadian marijuana is also available. Examples of pharmaceuticals abused in the area are fentanyl, methadone, OxyContin, Vicodin, and Xanax. In 2005 and 2006, drug distributors mixed heroin or cocaine with Mexican produced fentanyl with and sold it as heroin or cocaine. This occurred mostly in 2005 and 2006.
